Trainee Sample Preparer

About the role

ALS is seeking multiple trainees to join its teams at the Geochemistry site in Zillmere, Queensland. Sample Preparers prepare samples for testing to identify chemical composition, working in a warehouse operating machinery to crush, split and pulverise mineral samples for laboratory analysis. It is a casual, physically demanding role in a dusty environment, and previous production experience and flexibility with availability are highly advantageous.

Key responsibilities

• Operate sample preparation equipment according to procedures in the relevant QWIs
• Sort received samples according to the client's submission form and note discrepancies on the sample sorting sheet
• Apply barcode labels, capture received sample weights in the Gems interface and transfer scanned samples to drying racks
• Crush, riffle, split and sieve samples before drying them at the specified temperature
• Operate pulverising mills to reach the required end-product specification
• Inform the supervisor promptly of issues such as excessively wet samples or machinery breakdowns
• Maintain machinery and equipment and keep work areas clean and tidy

Required profile

• Available to work full-time hours on full rotating rosters (day 6:00am-2:15pm, afternoon 2:00pm-10:15pm, night 10:00pm-6:15am)
• Ability to follow set procedures and excellent attention to detail
• Reliable, physically fit and able to carry out repetitive manual handling tasks
• Willingness to work in a dusty environment where a half-face respirator is mandatory and to remain clean-shaven
• Eligible to work at ALS: citizen or permanent resident of the country of application, or holds or can obtain a valid working visa
