Project Engineer - Capital Works, Bakery Manufacturing

About the role

A long-established Australian food manufacturer supplying retail, foodservice and commercial customers is recruiting a Project Engineer for its Melbourne bakery site, which produces fresh and frozen bakery products on a fully automated line and a semi-automated line for specialty products. The site runs 24/5, extending to 24/6 with demand, and has a strong record of reliability. The role reports to the Head of Engineering with a dotted line to the Site Manager and focuses on capital projects.

Key responsibilities

• Take ownership of capital projects at the site, building the annual capital plan
• Deliver improvement, quality and maintenance upgrade projects from scoping and design through procurement, installation and commissioning
• Analyse bottlenecks on the automated line to identify where capacity can be lifted and turn findings into well-scoped projects
• Bridge continuous improvement and capital delivery, identifying opportunities yourself
• Play a central part in the site's larger upcoming projects, such as a proposed new production line and a new robotic system

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Engineering (mechanical preferred; electrical or mechatronic considered), or relevant industrial experience
• 5-7 years' engineering experience, including FMCG manufacturing (essential)
• Experience across continuous improvement and capital projects, ideally including projects of $5 million+
• Bakery or similar food manufacturing experience highly regarded
• Full Australian working rights (essential)

Required skills

• Sound understanding of GMP and food safety standards
• Experience managing projects from scoping and design through to installation and commissioning
• Proactive, hands-on approach and good working relationships with production, maintenance and leadership teams
