Trades Assistant – Level 4

About the role

John Holland is seeking a reliable Trades Assistant to join its Welshpool Plant Maintenance Facility and field maintenance team. This position offers the chance to develop new skills while supporting quality maintenance, repairs, and improvements across road, civil and rail plant.

Key responsibilities

• Work under supervision, following JHG safety processes and assist with equipment inspection, testing and maintenance.
• Assist with delivery, off‑loading, inspection, storage, off‑hiring and collection of plant and heavy components.
• Track and account for hired equipment, clean and wash plant, equipment and assemblies.
• Maintain yard and facilities, ensuring organization, safety and tidiness.
• Participate in planned and reactive maintenance, emergency works, and report equipment faults and hazards.
• Attend daily pre‑start meetings, toolbox meetings and complete timesheets, start cards and safety documentation.

Required profile

• General knowledge of plant and equipment and basic computer/IT literacy.
• Physically fit and able to pass a Category 1 medical, including drug and alcohol screening.
• Valid HR driver’s licence (or higher) and relevant high‑risk work licences (forklift, VLC/HIAB, CN crane, dogging and rigging).
• Willingness to work overtime, including occasional Saturdays.

Required skills

• Heavy‑equipment tickets (loaders, excavators, bobcats) – ideal but not required.
• Senior First Aid and CPRE certification.
• WP and Scissor‑lift high‑risk work licences.
• Working at heights qualification.
• White card, RIW card and network inductions for ARC and PTA.
