Strategic Communications Manager

About the role

The Strategic Communications Manager leads a small, dynamic team responsible for delivering a comprehensive suite of communication services across the department. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communication, the role ensures timely, collaborative delivery of internal communications, stakeholder engagement, website content, and corporate messaging.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a dedicated team of communications professionals to provide internal, stakeholder and corporate communication services.
• Oversee development, delivery and evaluation of communication plans for projects and initiatives.
• Provide strategic advice on campaigns, crisis communication and issues management to senior officers.
• Manage the department’s social media and digital marketing functions.
• Ensure alignment of key messages across platforms in partnership with the media team.
• Implement departmental communication policies, standards and governance processes.
• Prepare complex submissions, briefs, reports and correspondence on communication matters.
• Develop and maintain relationships with internal staff, ministerial offices, external stakeholders and other government agencies.
• Support the director with human resources, financial and procurement activities for the team.

Required profile

• Demonstrated cultural capability and commitment to inclusive practices aligned with the Human Rights Act 2019.
• Proven experience leading communication teams in a government or large‑organisation setting.
• Strong ability to build effective relationships and networks across multiple stakeholder groups.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strategic mindset.
