Staff Specialist - Intensive Care Medicine

About the role

Calvary Mater Newcastle is seeking a Staff Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine to join its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on a 0.5 FTE, 12-month fixed-term appointment starting 18 January 2027. The role sits within a collaborative multidisciplinary team providing patient-centred care to critically ill patients across the Hunter New England region. It is advertised as a fixed-term, part-time position of 40 hours per fortnight.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist intensive care services to critically ill adult patients with haematological, oncological and toxicological conditions
• Work with intensivists, medical and surgical teams, nursing staff and allied health professionals
• Supervise, teach and mentor junior medical officers, registrars and other medical staff
• Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, research and service development in the ICU
• Take part in departmental meetings, education programs and other role-relevant activities
• Support a culture of patient safety and continuous improvement, and help develop evidence-based clinical practices and protocols
• Work the ICU on-call and after-hours roster as required and appropriate to the appointment

Required profile

• Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) or an equivalent specialist qualification recognised in Australia
• Registration with the Medical Board of Australia and eligibility to practise as a specialist in NSW
• Demonstrated experience in adult intensive care medicine
• Unlimited working rights in Australia; successful completion of pre-employment checks (references, work rights, criminal history, WWCC); evidence of immunisation as required

• Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork and patient-centred care
• Teaching, supervision and professional development; quality improvement, clinical governance and/or research experience is desirable
