Staff Software Engineer - Payments Technology

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer in Payments Technology, based in Sydney or Melbourne. You will provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy across teams and help build secure, scalable platforms that power Australia's largest bank. You will join the API Customer Experience Squad within the Domestic Payments Crew, which is building end-to-end capabilities that let customers self-onboard to Payment API products, supported by an AI companion.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across teams, influencing engineering direction, architecture and technical standards.
• Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms and distributed systems.
• Lead architecture and design decisions and help modernise platforms using cloud-native and event-driven approaches.
• Champion engineering excellence across software quality, testing, observability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
• Foster a DevSecOps culture by owning solutions from design and development through deployment, production operations and continuous improvement.
• Mentor engineers, grow technical capability and support the adoption of modern and AI-enabled engineering practices.

Required profile

• An experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and influencing engineering direction.
• Deep expertise across several areas of modern software engineering, with curiosity and the ability to learn and adapt.
• Experience providing technical leadership, making architectural decisions and mentoring engineers is particularly valued.

Required skills

• Backend technologies such as Java and Spring Boot, Node.js and TypeScript.
• Building APIs, microservices and secure, high-performance distributed applications.
• Cloud-native engineering with AWS, Kubernetes, containerisation and Infrastructure as Code.
• Event-driven architecture and messaging technologies such as Kafka.
• CI/CD, DevSecOps, observability and resilience.
