Staff Software Engineer (Node.js & TypeScript) - Payments

About the role

CommBank is growing its Payments Engineering teams and is hiring multiple Staff Software Engineers across several technology streams, including Node.js and TypeScript, in Sydney or Melbourne. The Payments Data Services team builds data products, APIs and platforms that power payment experiences across the bank. As a Staff Software Engineer you will provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy across squads, mentor engineers and help build resilient, scalable platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across squads, set engineering direction and raise technical standards
• Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms
• Lead architecture and design decisions for complex distributed systems
• Drive modernisation using cloud-native and event-driven architectures
• Champion engineering excellence in software quality, testing, observability, security and operational excellence
• Foster a DevSecOps culture, owning solutions end-to-end from design and development through deployment and production operations
• Mentor engineers and partner with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations
• Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices and reusable platform capabilities

Required profile

• Experienced software engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and influencing engineering beyond their team
• Ideally has led technical direction across multiple teams, coached engineers and driven engineering standards
• Experience in high-availability, mission-critical platforms, regulated or security-sensitive environments, legacy modernisation or enterprise-scale software is helpful
• Engineers from payments or financial services are welcome, as are those from other large-scale technology environments
• Existing Commonwealth Bank Group employees must apply through the group's internal application process

Required skills

• Backend: Node.js and TypeScript, building APIs, microservices and distributed applications
• Cloud: AWS (EKS, ECS, Lambda, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3, CloudWatch), Kubernetes, Terraform or CloudFormation, CI/CD
• Distributed systems: event-driven architectures, Kafka or similar, microservices, API-first design, scalability and performance optimisation
