Staff Software Engineer (Java, AWS)

About the role

CommBank is hiring a Staff Software Engineer (Java, AWS) in its Customer Data Technologies team, which supports Know Your Customer refresh processes. You will lead the design and delivery of secure, scalable Java services for an in-house platform that lets customers complete identity refresh digitally, through a branch or with back-office support. The team is moving from a vendor-led platform to an in-house solution, working in a squad technical leadership capacity across Australia and India.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and delivery of backend and integration services.
• Design, build and operate Java microservices and REST APIs on AWS and Amazon EKS.
• Help shape event-driven solutions that connect Customer Lifecycle Management capabilities with bank channels.
• Apply full-cycle engineering practices and embed DevSecOps, automated testing, observability and reliable CI/CD.
• Provide technical direction, unblock delivery and mentor software and senior software engineers.
• Collaborate with product, business and technology stakeholders to turn complex needs into practical solutions.

Required profile

• Experienced software engineer combining deep backend expertise with pragmatic technical leadership.
• Able to move between architecture, hands-on engineering, operational ownership and coaching.
• Experience leading technical activities, mentoring engineers and influencing stakeholders.

Required skills

• Strong hands-on Java software engineering and system design experience.
• Demonstrated experience designing and operating microservices and REST APIs in production.
• Practical AWS and Amazon EKS experience, including containerised workloads.
• CI/CD and Git-based development, ideally with GitHub Actions.
• Understanding of DevSecOps, automated testing, code review and observable production systems.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools and practices.
• Valuable: Kafka, event-driven architecture, NoSQL databases or financial services environments.
