Job description

About the role

oOh!media, the largest out-of-home advertising company in Australia and New Zealand, is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for a full-time, permanent position in Sydney with four days per week in the office. This is a senior individual contributor role owning a core commercial domain that manages inventory availability and campaign scheduling across its national network, supporting sales teams in planning, quoting and scheduling campaigns.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the subdomain's technical strategy, architecture and technology roadmap, aligned with wider engineering leadership.
  • Deliver complex backend work and set patterns others can build on.
  • Design for correctness, data integrity and performance in high-throughput, concurrent systems.
  • Establish end-to-end observability, including distributed tracing, SLIs and SLOs.
  • Lead platform modernisation, including migration and decommissioning of existing services.
  • Mature CI/CD with automated testing, production safety and reliable rollback.
  • Lead design and PR reviews and mentor engineers through hands-on technical leadership.
  • Provide technical input behind delivery commitments and represent engineering in domain discussions.
  • Champion secure use of AI-assisted engineering tools and champion simple, pragmatic solutions.

Required profile

  • Proven staff or strong senior-level backend experience, ideally in Golang or Node.js.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating event-driven, serverless systems on AWS (Lambda, SQS, SNS, EventBridge).
  • Track record of protecting data integrity in high-throughput, concurrent systems.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring, design reviews and engineering standards, without relying on line authority.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management across technical and commercial audiences.
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency with full working rights in Australia.

Required skills

  • Observability and reliability practice, including distributed tracing and SLIs/SLOs.
  • Experience with DynamoDB or Aurora DSQL, CI/CD, config as code, contract and integration testing, and infrastructure as code such as AWS CDK.
  • Experience modernising legacy services and applying AI-native engineering practices.
  • AdTech, inventory management or scheduling experience is desirable but not essential.

What we offer

  • Modern offices with good amenities and easy transport access.
  • Competitive salary and bonus opportunities.
  • Career development and learning opportunities.
  • Generous parental leave and wellbeing support, including EAP access.
  • Team events, social activities, recognition programs, wellness initiatives and discounts.
