Staff Software Engineer - Full Stack (React, Next.js, Node)

About the role

CommBank's Home Buying domain is building digital platforms that help customers move from application through to home loan approval. As a Staff Software Engineer in the Apply With Ease Crew, you will be a hands-on technical leader working full-stack and full-cycle, owning solutions from architecture and design through to production, reliability and continuous improvement. You will also lead complex initiatives, influence engineering strategy and mentor engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Write production code and set technical direction, partnering with Product and Design to build secure, scalable home lending experiences
• Lead complex initiatives and raise standards across Home Buying, championing automation and AI-assisted development
• Mentor engineers and drive a build-it, run-it, improve-it culture
• Shape engineering strategy, architecture, technical standards and patterns beyond your immediate team
• Take accountability for production reliability, observability, performance, security and operational excellence

Required profile

• Deep full-stack and/or backend engineering expertise with the credibility to shape architecture and lead delivery
• Hands-on technical leadership, writing production code and guiding a small team
• End-to-end ownership, from discovery and architecture through to production
• Strong track record of distributed systems, APIs and cloud-native platforms at scale
• Champions modern engineering practices such as automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps and cloud engineering
• Ability to make pragmatic trade-offs between speed, quality, security, risk and cost
• Passion for AI-powered engineering and developer experience
