Staff Software Engineer - AI Document Intelligence

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help establish reusable AI-powered document intelligence capabilities and move AI beyond experimentation into trusted, scalable production services. The role combines strong software engineering expertise with hands-on experience in Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs) and document intelligence, and involves shaping the architecture and engineering direction of the Document Management team.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with senior technology leaders, architects and other engineering leaders to shape technical strategy, architecture and engineering standards.
• Lead the technical design of AI-powered Intelligent Document Processing capabilities.
• Build solutions for document classification, information extraction, validation and transformation.
• Establish reusable engineering patterns for prompt engineering, structured extraction, evaluation, confidence scoring and human-in-the-loop processing.
• Take AI solutions from experimentation to production-ready services, with guardrails, monitoring and engineering controls.
• Mentor and support engineers to uplift AI and software engineering capability across the team.

Required profile

• Strong software engineering experience and demonstrated technical leadership.
• Hands-on experience designing, building and deploying production AI, machine learning or Generative AI solutions.
• Ability to influence technical and architectural direction across teams, with strong communication skills.

Required skills

• Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, structured outputs and AI evaluation.
• Modern software engineering, APIs, cloud-native technologies and languages such as Python.
• Document intelligence, OCR, classification, extraction or Intelligent Document Processing.
• Understanding of scalable, resilient and secure enterprise architecture.
• Highly regarded: agentic AI, RAG, vector search, MLOps/LLMOps, AI observability, responsible AI or regulated environments.
