Job description
About the role
CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer in Integration Excellence to build and shape secure, scalable full-stack authentication experiences used by customers across its digital channels. The role takes end-to-end ownership with significant scope to influence architecture, engineering practices and technical direction, working with modern JavaScript technologies including Node.js, React, Next.js and GraphQL. It contributes to capabilities such as login, multi-factor authentication, passkeys and broader authentication integration.
Key responsibilities
- Design and deliver end-to-end authentication solutions spanning React/Next.js experiences and Node.js BFF services.
- Shape scalable BFF and API architecture using REST and GraphQL where appropriate.
- Translate high-level requirements into system designs and production-ready solutions.
- Design secure token management, sessions, authentication state and integration with identity platforms.
- Build resilient cloud-native services using modern distributed-system patterns.
- Champion clean code, automated testing, observability, CI/CD and production reliability.
- Collaborate across engineering teams to create reusable integration patterns and consistent customer experiences.
- Mentor engineers and influence technical decisions while staying close to hands-on engineering.
Required profile
- Strong full-stack engineering capability with end-to-end technical ownership; leaning towards backend or frontend is fine.
- Deep experience with Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript, including backend or BFF services.
- Demonstrated system-design capability.
- Experience designing REST APIs; GraphQL/Apollo experience is highly regarded but not essential.
- Understanding of cloud-native and distributed architectures, application security, authentication or identity patterns and secure handling of sessions or tokens.
- Strong fundamentals in automated testing, CI/CD, observability, reliability and clean, maintainable code.
- Curiosity about AI-assisted engineering is a plus.
The team works primarily with the web squad and shares a codebase. Applicants who are already part of the Commonwealth Bank Group (including Bankwest, x15ventures) must apply through Sidekick. The advertising ends on 30/10/2026.
