Staff Software Engineer - Financial Crime Detection

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its EC Technology team, which builds the platforms that detect and investigate financial crime. The role covers production services, APIs, data integrations and the interfaces used by detection and investigation teams. As a Staff Software Engineer you ship production code, shape design decisions and help other engineers grow.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and operate production services and APIs with clear contracts and integration boundaries.
• Contribute to architecture and design decisions, including refactoring, modularisation and performance improvements.
• Consolidate capabilities onto shared platforms and retire legacy technology where appropriate.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and progressive delivery practices.
• Establish reliability and observability through dashboards, alerting, service-level objectives and operational ownership.
• Build secure, dependable AI and agentic features, including orchestration, evaluation and guardrails.
• Embed security, privacy, reliability and regulatory controls into design and delivery.
• Raise engineering standards through code reviews, pairing and clear technical reasoning.

Required profile

• Strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, concurrency and system design.
• Experience across backend services, APIs and data integration, open to internal user interfaces when needed.
• Ability to design and build services in a modern typed language such as Java, Kotlin, Go or Python.
• Full-stack capability, including React and TypeScript or equivalent, and backend-for-frontend layers.
• Understanding of cloud-native delivery, containers, automated pipelines and production observability.
• Platform mindset, learning new tools as needed and applying security, privacy and risk controls from the start.

Required skills

• Useful: AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Kafka, Grafana, Prometheus.
• Valuable: experience building or operating AI-enabled systems (model integration, orchestration, evaluation, guardrails).
