Job description
About the role
CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to build and evolve the platforms behind digital banking experiences used by millions of customers. The role combines deep hands-on engineering with technical leadership: solving complex problems, setting the technical direction for the squad and raising the bar for colleagues. You will join a cross-functional squad of engineers, product owners and designers within Digital, which owns its customer experiences end to end, from app and web front ends to backend services and APIs.
Key responsibilities
- Design and build services, APIs and experiences that make banking simpler, safer and better, using customer insight to shape technical decisions.
- Own your code from design through to production, including testing, release and how it runs in production, managing risk actively.
- Design, build and evolve GraphQL subgraphs and schemas that power customer experiences, keeping them performant and reliable.
- Contribute to critical implementation while leading technical design and breaking large problems into deliverable pieces.
- Guide architecture across multiple services and help guide architecture on the native mobile side, introducing patterns and frameworks that improve scalability, maintainability and performance.
- Mentor engineers across squads, review code with candid feedback and build an environment where people can speak up and challenge constructively.
- Drive improvements in automated testing, CI/CD, observability and automation to reduce operational toil.
- Use agentic engineering, prompt engineering and AI agent-first development to build products faster and to a higher standard.
Required profile
- A strong track record of designing, building and running large-scale, customer-facing or business-critical systems in production.
- Full ownership of work, from first line of code through testing, release and production support.
- Comfortable working in a monorepo alongside a microservices architecture.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, challenge assumptions and turn complex problems into pragmatic solutions.
- Balances deep hands-on contribution with technical leadership and influences without formal authority.
- Clear, empathetic communication and accountability beyond the immediate team; enjoys mentoring others.
Required skills
- Backend.NET / C#, Java, Node.js or comparable technologies.
- GraphQL and subgraphs: schema design, resolvers, federated or subgraph architectures and performance at scale.
- Front end / web: React, TypeScript, Next.js.
- Architecture: microservices, distributed systems, event-driven architecture (Kafka), monorepo.
- APIs and integration: REST, GraphQL, asynchronous messaging.
- Testing: unit, integration and end-to-end testing, plus performance and non-functional testing.
- Mobile awareness: native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) architecture.
- Cloud and infrastructure: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code.
- DevOps: CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), automation and modern deployment practices.
