Staff Software Engineer - Android

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to shape the architecture and engineering practices behind customer experiences in the CommBank app. Working in a Sydney-based squad within Retail Technology, you will provide hands-on technical leadership across the design and delivery of Android experiences, help shape the mobile platform architecture and roadmap, and guide critical technical decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Shape Android architecture, technical direction and the engineering roadmap.
• Design and build high-quality experiences within the CommBank app.
• Lead critical design decisions and promote pragmatic, scalable solutions.
• Influence engineering practices across the squad and broader value stream.
• Own solutions end-to-end, from design and development through to production operation.
• Mentor engineers and share knowledge through technical guidance and feedback.
• Improve quality through automated testing, continuous delivery and production observability.
• Collaborate across mobile and backend systems to deliver cohesive customer outcomes.

Required profile

• An experienced Android engineer who can influence architecture, engineering practices and delivery outcomes.
• Ability to lead technical decisions, challenge existing approaches and build support for strategic engineering direction.
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving technical capability and quality across teams.
• Strong communication of technical decisions, with a focus on customers and quality.

Required skills

• Deep Android development with Kotlin, the Android SDK and Jetpack Compose.
• Mobile architecture: MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture and modular design.
• Dependency injection, object-oriented design, SOLID principles and software design patterns.
• Secure, reliable mobile apps supported by automated testing, continuous delivery and production observability.
• REST or GraphQL APIs and cloud services such as AWS.
• Exposure to iOS, Swift.NET, C#, microservices, AI/ML, Agentic AI or regulated environments is beneficial.
