Staff Backend Software Engineer – Loki

About the role

Grafana Labs is looking for a Staff Backend Software Engineer to join the Databases team that builds and operates Loki, its open‑source log aggregation system. The role is fully remote for candidates located in Australia or Singapore and focuses on designing, building, and maintaining highly reliable, high‑performance distributed services.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate critical backend systems for Loki, ensuring reliability, performance and availability.
• Drive projects from ideation through production, including on‑call ownership and incident follow‑up.
• Contribute to open‑source projects and collaborate across teams on related databases (Mimir, Tempo, Pyroscope) and observability tooling.
• Mentor teammates, participate in design discussions and help shape the product roadmap.

Required profile

• Motivated self‑starter with a bias toward action and strong customer focus.
• Ability to break down complex challenges, deliver MVPs, gather feedback and iterate quickly.
• Excellent communication skills for a fully remote, globally distributed team.

Required skills

• Strong programming experience – Go is primary; familiarity with Python, C, C++ or Rust is a plus.
• Experience building cloud‑native services and working with Kubernetes.
• Understanding of microservices, distributed systems and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus or OpenTelemetry.
