Special Counsel – General Insurance

About the role

McCabes Lawyers is seeking an experienced Special Counsel to join its General Insurance team in Sydney. The role involves handling complex public liability and personal injury claims for government clients, with optional exposure to private sector matters.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee and manage a diverse caseload of defendant public liability and personal injury claims.
• Provide mentorship and supervision to junior lawyers, supporting their professional development.
• Represent clients in negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.
• Deliver ongoing legal advice throughout the litigation process.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) with a current NSW practising certificate.
• Minimum 5 years post‑admission experience in general insurance matters.
• Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a collaborative team.

Required skills

• Strong command of Australian tort law, civil procedure and relevant legislation.
• Exceptional research, analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with a plain‑language style.
