Software Engineer (Cassandra) - StorageGRID
NetApp
Job description
About the role
NetApp is building StorageGRID, an AWS cloud-compatible object storage platform for AI data lakes. As a Software Engineer, Cassandra at MTS 4 level, you will focus on Java-based Cassandra development for the distributed database layer behind StorageGRID metadata services, scale-out reliability, upgradeability and enterprise workloads. The role suits an experienced hands-on engineer who enjoys distributed systems, database internals, open-source technologies and performance and reliability engineering.
Key responsibilities
- Design and implement Java-based Cassandra features with end-to-end ownership, translating product, scale, upgrade and supportability requirements into technical designs
- Develop efficient, maintainable code and troubleshoot complex StorageGRID issues involving Cassandra storage, compaction, repair, replication and cluster behavior
- Take part in design reviews and influence component-level design in metadata services, observability, repair, upgradeability and cluster operations
- Follow open-source development practices, including code reviews, patch quality, testing and community collaboration
- Optimize Cassandra for scale, throughput, resiliency and failure recovery, and lead performance analysis, benchmarking and capacity planning
- Drive medium-to-large Cassandra initiatives from design through release readiness, and contribute to code reviews, issue triage and root-cause analysis
- Collaborate with the senior Cassandra developer, StorageGRID engineering, QA, product management, supportability, support and field teams, and provide backup support for Cassandra workflows
Required profile
- 8-12 years of experience in backend, systems, database, storage or distributed systems engineering
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Ability to independently drive feature development, technical investigations and root-cause analysis
- Strong communication skills and ability to write clear designs and explain trade-offs
Required skills
- Java; Python, Go or C/C++ a plus
- Apache Cassandra or comparable distributed database / NoSQL systems, preferably at internals or platform integration level
- Replication, consistency, partitioning, failure handling, node lifecycle and cluster coordination
- Linux-based, scale-out or storage-oriented environments
- Preferred: Cassandra internals, open-source project contributions, performance optimization, benchmarking, observability, StorageGRID, S3, Kubernetes, CI/CD and AI-assisted development tools
What we offer
- Target salary range of 170,000 - 253,000 USD (OTE, depending on location, qualifications and experience)
- Benefits package covering health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, leave options, employee stock purchase plan and/or RSUs, subject to regional variation
- Hybrid working environment with in-office expectations shared during recruitment
