Software Engineer - AI Venturing Pod

About the role

x15ventures is CommBank's venture-building arm, and its AI Venturing team turns venture problems and emerging AI capabilities into products people use. Reporting to the Chief Venturing Officer, you will work with venture and x15 leaders to identify where product engineering and AI can create the most value, and help identify which problems matter. The role suits Senior, Staff or Principal engineers, and hiring is at the level matching demonstrated experience.

Key responsibilities

• Own outcomes end to end: take ambiguous customer and venture problems through discovery, prototyping, production, measurement and iteration.
• Take focused missions across the portfolio, moving between ventures at different stages of maturity and collaborating closely with each venture.
• Extend x15's AI-native engineering capability by using coding agents and AI-enabled workflows to improve speed, testing, iteration and quality, and turn successful patterns into repeatable practices.
• Design, evaluate and operate AI systems using the right mix of models, agents, tools and deterministic software, making trade-offs on accuracy, latency, cost, reliability, security and control.
• Build AI products in a high-trust environment, with security, privacy, testing, observability and controls built in from the start.
• Work with product, design, venture leaders and customers to test assumptions and decide what warrants further investment.
• Develop reusable AI services, integration patterns and architecture that help multiple ventures move faster or operate more safely.

Required profile

• Repeatedly shipped significant software products and can explain your technical, product and delivery contribution.
• Hands-on across the full stack, able to become effective quickly in unfamiliar products and codebases.
• Strong product judgement, with sensible trade-offs between customer value, commercial value, complexity and speed.
• Uses AI-assisted development as part of engineering practice and knows when to choose a simpler or deterministic approach.
• Navigates security, privacy, risk, legal, platform and organisational constraints pragmatically.
• Adapts across ventures, domains and technical environments while carrying useful lessons forward.

Depth in building and evaluating AI-powered applications, cloud-native applications and APIs, secure products in regulated environments, or startup/venture studio experience is valued. Current Commonwealth Bank Group members must apply through the internal application process.
