Service Technician – Mechanical

About the role

UGL Transport is expanding its Manufacturing & Maintenance team and is looking for Mechanical Service Technicians to join the locomotive maintenance crew at the Hunter Valley Maintenance Centre in Newcastle. The role is permanent, full‑time, operating on a 9‑day fortnight with day and afternoon shifts, and may include night or 12‑hour rosters to support 24/7 operations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance on locomotives.
• Conduct mechanical fault finding, diagnosis and troubleshooting.
• Repair and maintain locomotive components and equipment.
• Operate workshop equipment safely and efficiently.
• Complete maintenance documentation accurately.
• Work safely and contribute to a positive team environment.

Required profile

• Australian‑recognised Mechanical/Electrical Trade Certificate and Certificate of Proficiency.
• Proven hands‑on experience in a maintenance environment, preferably rail or locomotive.
• Strong commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
• Good communication skills and a collaborative, team‑first attitude.
• Reliable work ethic, accountability and pride in delivering high‑quality work.

Required skills

• Mechanical fault finding, diagnosis and troubleshooting.
• Operating workshop equipment (e.g., lifts, tools).
• Use of computers and tablets for maintenance documentation.
• Basic digital literacy for data entry and reporting.
