Senior Software Engineer, App Modernization

About the role

MongoDB is growing its team in Sydney, where the Application Modernisation Platform (AMP) helps customers move from legacy relational platforms to modern, scalable systems built on MongoDB. The App Analysis & Modelling team builds code analysis tools that construct code dependency graphs and schema recommendation engines, sitting at the intersection of analysis, data modelling and AI. The role suits someone passionate about scalable backend systems, with the ability to contribute across the full stack, and is open to candidates based in Sydney for a hybrid working model.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute high-quality, well-tested code to the backend and frontend services of the App Analysis & Modelling team.
• Design and build scalable APIs and data pipelines for code analysis and schema recommendation features.
• Drive technical design and architecture for complex features (senior) or implement robust solutions following established designs (mid-level).
• Collaborate with Product Management, other engineers and designers to deliver on the product roadmap.
• Take part in code reviews, give and ask feedback on design documents and pull requests, and help troubleshoot complex issues.
• Support engineering processes such as CI/CD, quality and testing, and mentor team members (senior).

Required profile

• 3-5+ years (mid-level) or 5+ years (senior) of commercial software development.
• Degree in Computer Science or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Curiosity, a positive attitude and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Required skills

• Strong proficiency in Python and/or Java.
• Scalable, high-performance APIs and backend services.
• Relational data modelling and SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar), including schema design and query optimisation.
• Algorithms, data structures and their time and space complexity.
• Frontend with React and TypeScript, or willingness to work across the full stack.
• Nice to have: AI-powered features with LLMs, code analysis tools, MongoDB, Kubernetes, open-source contributions.
