Senior Software Engineer - AI

About the role

A well-established Australian software business, which builds and runs its own products and puts AI at the centre of both the products and how the team builds them, is looking for a senior backend engineer to build agentic AI capabilities from concept through to production. The role is based in Sydney CBD, hybrid two days a week in the office, and is permanent and full-time.

Key responsibilities

• Build backend applications in a cloud-first environment, ideally on AWS, and design for scale and reliability while making the architecture decisions for production systems.
• Develop AI-driven features and automation, and own the delivery of agentic capabilities from first idea to production use.
• Drive modern engineering practice and continuous improvement across the team, using AI-assisted tools to raise quality and pace.
• Work with product and other functions to turn hard technical problems into outcomes customers feel.

Required profile

• Strong backend development experience in .NET, Java or a similar object-oriented language; the team values engineering capability, problem-solving and learning agility over any single stack.
• Experience designing and delivering cloud-based solutions, ideally in AWS.
• Product mindset and solid engineering fundamentals, with care for quality and how things are built.
• Comfort owning complex problems end to end and working across functions.
• Full working rights in Australia and based in Sydney; no sponsorship and no remote option.

Required skills

• .NET, Java or a similar object-oriented language
• Advanced use of AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, across development, documentation, code review and daily workflow
• Cloud development, preferably AWS

What we offer

• Salary of $150,000 to $170,000 plus superannuation and bonus, with room to move for the right experience.
