Job description

About the role

The Australian National University (ANU) is recruiting a Senior Research Software Engineer (Training Specialist) for the ACCESS-NRI User Training Team. ACCESS-NRI is Australia's climate simulator, a collaborative venture between government agencies, universities and the research community that develops, maintains and provides access to national climate and weather models. The team sits at the intersection of research software, climate science and community engagement, helping researchers use ACCESS climate modelling software effectively.

You will work with software engineers, research scientists and the wider ACCESS community to understand user workflows, identify improvements and develop resources, processes and initiatives that make the software, data and workflows easier to learn, adopt and use. The role involves collaboration across teams and disciplines and ownership of several projects and initiatives.

Required profile

  • Background, interest or experience in scientific research, particularly in climate science or a related computational field, is valuable.
  • Ability to communicate and work across disciplines with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience designing and delivering training for researchers and technical users, and creating clear technical documentation and learning materials.
  • Understanding of user needs and user-centred design through usability activities.
  • Experience planning, coordinating and delivering projects in a collaborative research or technical environment.
  • Curiosity, initiative, flexibility and willingness to contribute across a broad range of user enablement activities; experience with every aspect of the role is less important than these qualities.

Required skills

  • Familiarity with Python, Git/GitHub and scientific computing workflows, including reproducible research, open science and FAIR principles.
  • Beneficial: running climate models and working with climate model output, Linux/Unix, HPC, cloud or hybrid computing environments.
  • Beneficial: documentation platforms such as Read the Docs and Markdown.
  • Beneficial: large scientific datasets, formats and tools such as NetCDF, Xarray, Dask and CF conventions.
  • Beneficial: supporting research or software communities through workshops, forums and user support.

What we offer

  • Salary package of $124,392 - $133,017 per annum plus 17% superannuation.
  • Fixed-term full-time position until June 2028, with possible extension; flexible working arrangements, including consideration of part-time roles.
  • Annual leave loading and a supportive, diverse and inclusive workplace with staff amenities such as gyms, a swimming pool and childcare centres.

To apply, candidates must upload a statement addressing the selection criteria and a current CV with at least two referees. Only applicants who meet the selection criteria will be considered, and the preferred candidate must have the right to live and work in Australia.
