Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Australia

About the role

Neara builds physics-enabled digital twins of electricity grids across four continents, using machine learning to simulate extreme weather and structural stress so utilities can identify risks and optimise investments. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer based in Sydney, you will create ML models that turn data from sources such as LIDAR, imagery and vector data into accurate representations of real-world infrastructure. You will work through the full ML lifecycle, from data collection and QA to training and model monitoring, and mentor junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Develop approaches to generate accurate electric networks from imperfect data using deep learning and classical ML algorithms.
• Develop and optimise training pipelines to reduce toil and time from idea to evaluation.
• Scale model serving for different problems and reduce time from first model to production.
• Improve model QA speed and detect data and distribution drift.
• Work with LiDAR, aerial photography, photogrammetry and GIS data, building scalable data pipelines for training and serving.
• Mentor other engineers in model training and software engineering best practices.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience with machine learning and deep learning.
• Strong foundation in software engineering.
• Excellent problem-solving skills in new domains.
• Ability to work asynchronously and cross-functionally on ill-defined problems.
• Ability to own problems and proactively tackle challenges.
• Current, unrestricted working rights; visa sponsorship is not offered.

Required skills

• Proficiency in PyTorch, TensorFlow or JAX.
• Knowledge of MLOps and data handling best practices.
