Senior Legal Counsel

About the role

The Senior Legal Counsel will join the Coroners Court of Victoria’s Legal Services team, providing expert legal advice and advocacy on complex coronial investigations, inquests, appeals and policy matters. Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, you will help shape coronial practice and contribute to safer communities across Victoria.

Key responsibilities

• Provide authoritative legal advice to the State Coroner, Coroners and court staff on significant legal, policy and operational issues.
• Lead and manage complex casework, including high‑profile investigations and inquests.
• Prepare high‑quality legal opinions, submissions and strategic advice for inquests and Supreme Court appeal proceedings.
• Contribute to law reform, policy development and service‑improvement initiatives.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with Coroners, legal practitioners, government agencies and other stakeholders.
• Mentor and support colleagues, fostering legal excellence and continuous learning within the team.

Required profile

• Experienced litigation lawyer with strong analytical, advocacy and stakeholder‑management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work in complex, sensitive environments and exercise sound judgement.
• Motivated by meaningful public‑service work and the delivery of justice.

• Expertise in coronial law and litigation processes.
• Proven experience handling complex investigations, inquests and appeals.
• Advanced legal research, drafting and policy‑advice capabilities.
