Senior Full Stack Engineer

About the role

The Monash Institute of Railway Technology is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to lead the research, development, deployment and management of software platforms and AI models that turn sensor data into actionable insights for railway operators.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and deploy end‑to‑end AI applications, backend APIs, data pipelines and user interfaces for condition‑monitoring systems.
• Integrate computer‑vision, laser profiling, LiDAR and camera‑based AI on edge devices with limited resources.
• Implement real‑time sensor‑fusion, parallel processing, multithreading and GPU/distributed computing solutions.
• Establish MLOps practices, CI/CD automation, testing protocols and model confidence metrics.
• Lead project scopes, deliver technical outcomes on time and budget, and maintain client relationships.
• Provide field support during commissioning, deployment and troubleshooting, including travel for site visits.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
• Willingness to travel within Australia and overseas and to undertake out‑of‑hours field work.
• Ability to pass pre‑employment railway medical and drug screenings.

Required skills

• Full‑stack development: Python, Flask, Docker, AWS, GitLab, databases and front‑end interfaces.
• AI & computer‑vision: machine‑learning workflows, MLOps, edge optimisation, LiDAR, radar, inertial and imaging data processing.
• Advanced data processing: sensor fusion, multithreading, GPU/distributed computing.
• Software governance: CI/CD, testing, data traceability and model confidence metrics.
