Senior Embedded Software Engineer - IoT

About the role

A fast-scaling Australian IoT company, represented by Talent Aligned, is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to take ownership of an evolving embedded platform. The company's rugged, low-maintenance IoT devices monitor remote infrastructure in harsh environments, with thousands of units in the field and data sent via satellite, cellular and long-range networks. The role covers firmware architecture, development, testing and release, working alongside hardware and cloud teams.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and support embedded firmware on new and existing products using modern C++ on ARM Cortex-M devices with FreeRTOS
• Ensure embedded solutions are robust, reliable and highly maintainable
• Collaborate with in-house and third-party engineers on functional electronic design, validation and testing
• Drive the firmware release pipeline and contribute to continuous integration and test frameworks
• Perform rigorous real-world testing and validation of embedded systems for resilience in extreme field conditions
• Document architecture, design decisions and interface specifications
• Provide technical leadership and guidance in the firmware space

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development using C/C++ on ARM Cortex-M (NXP and STM32 experience highly regarded)
• Confident embedded systems developer who writes clean, maintainable and scalable code
• Self-starter who balances deep technical work with high-level systems thinking and thrives in fast-paced environments
• Comfortable mentoring junior engineers
• Must be based in Sydney due to the hardware-focused, collaborative nature of the role

Required skills

• C++ templates, object-oriented programming and memory-efficient coding
• FreeRTOS, MCUExpresso, Visual Studio or similar environments
• Hardware interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART) and low-level driver development
• Telemetry, IoT systems, edge processing and low-power design
• Desirable: satellite communications (Globalstar, Inmarsat), NB-IoT/Cat M1, Bluetooth, LoRa; reading schematics and using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
• Desirable: CI/CD, Python or C# for testbeds, AWS, Bitbucket, Confluence, Jira
