Senior Associate - Civil Litigation and Professional Conduct (Brisbane)

About the role

Avant Law, a national specialist law firm, is seeking a Senior Associate to join its Brisbane team. You will act for doctors and medical practices in civil claims and professional conduct matters, including regulatory and disciplinary proceedings. The role suits an experienced lawyer (5+ PQE) and is a permanent full-time position with a hybrid work arrangement.

Key responsibilities

• Independently manage a diverse civil litigation and professional conduct file load, meeting KPIs and billing targets while delivering high-quality, member-focused legal services.
• Prepare and manage medical negligence claims under the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 (Qld) and civil litigation files.
• Handle professional conduct matters, including responding to AHPRC, the Medical Board of Australia, the Office of the Health Ombudsman, the Office of the Information Commissioner, the Health Rights Commission, the Coroner's Court, the Department of Health Disability & Ageing (Medicare) and health quality commissions.
• Provide oral and written legal advice to members, practices and Claims Managers, and represent members in courts, tribunals, commissions and inquiries.
• Write articles for member newsletters and give internal and external legal presentations.
• Assist the Legal Team Manager in supervising and mentoring junior solicitors and coordinating the team.

Required profile

• Demonstrated post-admission experience (ideally 5+ years) in medical negligence litigation, preferably on the defendant side, and professional conduct matters.
• Extensive civil litigation experience, and/or adjacent fields such as personal injuries, with minimal supervision.
• Relevant tertiary legal qualification.
• Eligible to hold an unsupervised practising certificate as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia.
• Ability to mentor junior team members.
