Principal Water Resources Engineer

About the role

The Melbourne Water Resources team at AECOM is seeking a Principal Water Resources Engineer (Flooding) to lead technical delivery on defence, water and infrastructure projects across Australia and New Zealand. This hands‑on leadership role combines flood modelling expertise with client interaction and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the technical delivery and review of flood risk assessments, flood studies and hydraulic modelling projects.
• Undertake and review hydrologic and hydraulic modelling using TUFLOW and related software packages.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers across the Water Resources team.
• Support defence, water, transport and major infrastructure projects with specialist flood engineering expertise.
• Communicate technical findings to clients and stakeholders and contribute to project planning, delivery and quality assurance.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Water Engineering or equivalent.
• Approximately 8+ years of experience in water resources engineering, flood modelling or flood risk management.
• Australian citizenship and ability to obtain Defence security clearances.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently within multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency with TUFLOW and related hydrologic/hydraulic modelling tools.
• Expertise in flood risk assessment, flood studies and hydraulic modelling.
• Knowledge of Australian Rainfall & Runoff (ARR) guidelines and state flood planning requirements.
• Experience delivering technical assessments and mentoring junior engineers.
