Principal Legal Officer

About the role

The NSW Early Learning Commission is seeking a Principal Legal Officer to lead its legal team. This senior position will provide strategic, client‑centred legal advice that underpins the Commission’s regulatory functions and safeguards public confidence in early childhood education and care services across New South Wales.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal advice to senior management and operational teams on a wide range of matters.
• Lead and manage litigation, representing the Commission in courts, tribunals and other forums.
• Draft, develop and review complex contracts, legislation, policies, court documents and briefings.
• Mentor, develop and foster a high‑performing legal team focused on continuous improvement.
• Design and deliver legal education and training for internal and external stakeholders.

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a solicitor with proven leadership capability.
• Senior‑level expertise in administrative, compliance and regulatory law.
• Demonstrated ability to provide strategic advice and influence outcomes.
• Experience in legislative reform and statutory interpretation is desirable.
• Background in government, public sector or highly regulated environments is an advantage.
