Principal Consultant - Mining Advisory (Underground)

About the role

SLR's Mining Advisory Group is recruiting a Principal Underground Consultant in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide or Perth. The role sits within a group of over 5,000 staff across 35 technical disciplines, offering exposure to a diverse portfolio of mining projects across Australia, Africa, North America and other jurisdictions. It suits engineers who want broader commercial, technical and international exposure than a traditional site-based role.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver complex technical studies end to end, accounting for quality, scope, time and budget.
• Lead, manage and mentor multi-disciplinary teams.
• Act as a trusted advisor, translating complex engineering data into strategic advice.
• Drive business growth: generate leads, build a pipeline and own client relationships, negotiating scope, fees and timelines.
• Lead proposal development, including tailored scopes of work.
• Elevate the company's market profile through industry forums, presentations and published technical insights.

Required profile

• 10 to 15 years of experience in metalliferous underground mining.
• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a closely related discipline; postgraduate qualifications are highly desirable.
• Chartered Professional status, or eligibility to attain it.
• Competent Person status under JORC and/or Qualified Person under NI 43-101 for relevant mining domains.
• AusIMM membership.
• Experience across countries, jurisdictions and regulatory environments, and broad exposure to ESG issues in mining.

Required skills

• Unground mining engineering: stope optimisation, mine design, ventilation, ground control, scheduling, fleet estimation, equipment selection, cost estimation, financial modelling and operational improvement.
• Experience with short-, medium- and long-term plans, scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, independent technical reviews and statements of ore reserves.
• Advanced knowledge of Deswik (stope optimisation, mine design, scheduling, enterprise optimisation), Surpac, Vulcan, CAD, Minemax, RPM MinePlanner and RPM Enterprise Optimiser.
