Plant Mechanic

About the role

Join Coates as a Plant Mechanic at the Cambridge branch, where you will keep a diverse hire fleet safe, reliable and ready for customers. This hands‑on mechanical role offers variety, teamwork and the chance to maintain high‑performing equipment in a modern, safety‑focused workshop.

Key responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance, servicing and overhauls on a wide range of hire equipment.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical faults efficiently and safely.
• Complete and maintain accurate service and repair records.
• Work proactively to minimise operational downtime.
• Ensure all work complies with Coates safety and quality standards.
• Collaborate closely with operations, service and customer‑facing teams to support equipment availability and high customer satisfaction.

Required profile

• Relevant trade qualification such as Mechanical, Diesel or Plant Mechanic.
• Current Driver’s Licence (MR or HR preferred).
• Forklift and Elevated Work Platform tickets are beneficial but not essential.
• Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic and preventative maintenance mindset.
• Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.

Required skills

• Experience with petrol and diesel engines.
• Knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics systems.
• Basic electrical fault‑finding ability.
• Forklift operation.
• Elevated Work Platform (EWP) operation.
