Membership, Marketing & Events Manager

About the role

We are seeking a senior Membership, Marketing & Events Manager to lead the membership, marketing, communications and events functions for Australia's peak body for sports medicine and sports science. This hands‑on role will drive member acquisition and engagement, own the Zoho CRM, and oversee a year‑round programme of professional events including the flagship scientific conference.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and continuously improve SMA’s membership strategy and value proposition.
• Drive member acquisition, engagement, renewal and retention.
• Create initiatives for professional development, mentoring, networking, career support and recognition.
• Use member research, feedback and behavioural data to identify needs and enhance services.
• Support advisory committees, special interest groups and professional networks.
• Take functional ownership of SMA’s Zoho CRM and membership processes.
• Design and optimise member journeys, workflows, automations, segmentation and reporting.
• Ensure member data is accurate and effectively applied across all functions.
• Translate business requirements into practical CRM and process improvements.
• Lead SMA’s marketing and communications function, establishing standards for quality, consistency and effectiveness.
• Oversee member communications, marketing campaigns, publications, digital channels and promotional activity.
• Protect and strengthen SMA’s brand across all touchpoints.
• Ensure marketing activities support membership growth, events and broader strategic objectives.
• Oversee SMA’s year‑round programme of online and face‑to‑face professional events, including webinars and networking sessions.
• Lead the planning and delivery of SMA’s major annual scientific conference, managing marketing, delegate experience, sponsorship and stakeholder engagement.
• Establish project governance, budgets, timelines, responsibilities and performance measures for events.
• Use participation data and attendee feedback to continuously improve the events programme.
• Lead, develop and coordinate the membership, marketing, communications and events team.
• Contribute to organisational strategy and planning as a member of the leadership team.
• Manage budgets, priorities, suppliers and performance across the portfolio.

Required profile

• Senior, hands‑on leader with proven experience in membership growth and engagement.
• Demonstrated experience managing CRM systems, preferably Zoho.
• Strong background in marketing, communications and brand management.
• Experience planning and delivering professional events and large conferences.
• Ability to use data and member insights to drive decisions.
• Proven leadership and team development skills.
• Strategic thinker with solid budget and supplier management experience.
• Collaborative mindset to work across education and training functions.
