Mechanical Fitter - Rolling Stock Maintenance

About the role

Gemco Rail, a subsidiary of Engenco Limited, is the leading independent provider of rollingstock maintenance, products and services to the Australian and New Zealand rail markets. It manufactures, maintains and overhauls wagons, locomotives, passenger cars, rollingstock components and track maintenance equipment. An experienced Mechanical Fitter is sought on a 38-hour-a-week casual basis in Gladstone, reporting to the Workshop Supervisor. The fitter performs examinations and maintenance of rail rolling stock in line with established procedures and protocols, ensuring compliance with Rail Safety and OH&S regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform full mechanical inspections of rolling stock to minimum Railways of Australia engineering standards and practices
• Complete wagon wheel changes
• Carry out ECP SCAT testing and fault finding
• Ensure all required documentation and certification is completed correctly and legibly
• Interface with transport companies and shunting contractors during rolling stock marshalling and depot operations via the radio network
• Communicate inspection results to operations personnel and the Workshop Supervisor
• Ensure the security of the workshop, workshop vehicles and equipment
• Carry out repairs and services to company and client rolling stock, following reasonable instructions from the supervisor

Required profile

• Trade qualification
• Experience in rolling stock or railway equipment
• Able to work flexible hours, including overtime, shift work and weekends
• Railway track access / rail awareness certificate
• Desirable: previous experience in the rail industry

Required skills

• Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations
• Sound general engineering knowledge
• Exposure to hydraulic and pneumatic systems
• Good written and verbal communication and organisational skills
