Mechanical Engineer – Mining & Heavy Industry

About the role

CMP Engineers, a Brisbane‑based mechanical engineering design and consulting firm serving mining, industrial and heavy‑industry clients, is expanding its team. We are looking for experienced Mechanical Engineers to contribute to a wide range of projects from concept through to fabrication and commissioning.

Key responsibilities

• Design and drafting of custom machinery, structures and equipment modifications using 3D CAD, including material, bearing and weld design, hydraulic and fluid‑power systems, and RPEQ‑certified documentation.
• Perform analysis and simulation such as FEA, CFD, discrete element modelling, multibody simulation, fatigue and rainflow analysis.
• Materials and failure engineering including materials selection, metallurgical and root‑cause failure analysis, fitness‑for‑service assessments and weld repair engineering.
• Forensic and investigative engineering – accident investigation, expert witness reporting and insurance/legal documentation.
• Structural integrity and life‑extension work – design audits, condition inspections, NDT interpretation, lifting and jacking studies, and life‑extension strategies for major plant.
• Load testing and certification – proof‑load, overload and stability testing and engineering certification.
• Field testing and measurement – strain gauging, vibration and modal measurement, data logging, remote telemetry and long‑term damage monitoring.
• Control and autonomous systems – PLC programming and control‑system design.
• Risk and safety engineering – hazard and risk assessments, machine‑safety and safety‑system design.
• Project delivery – managing projects from brief through fabrication liaison, site work and commissioning.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
• 2–10 years of post‑graduate experience (strong candidates outside this range will be considered).
• Proficiency in 3D CAD with demonstrated design‑for‑fabrication experience.
• Ability to work independently on design packages and small projects.
• Desirable exposure to mining, heavy industry or engineering consulting.
• Competency in one or more of FEA, CFD, field testing or controls.
• RPEQ registration or working toward registration.
