Mechanical Design Engineer (R&D)

About the role

Join Thales' growing engineering team in Melbourne as a Mechanical Design Engineer (R&D) on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. You will contribute to the early development of unique vehicle and tactical system components, ensuring they meet customer needs and defence standards.

Key responsibilities

• Produce designs and solutions that satisfy customer requirements and applicable regulations.
• Conduct prototyping, trials and demonstrations of developed solutions.
• Create, interpret and optimise precision 3D CAD models (structural, mechanical, electrical) using Creo Parametric.
• Design, develop and validate components and systems for medium and heavy military vehicles, working independently or within a team.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
• Eligible for NER and CPEng registration with Engineers Australia.
• Experience in design and manufacturing environments, preferably automotive or similar.
• Understanding of quality systems, MIL‑STD and DEF STAN compliance.

Required skills

• Creo Parametric (including Schematics, Sheet Metal, Ergonomics).
• DFMEA and PLM system usage.
• Interpretation of engineering drawings and technical documents.
• First‑principles engineering calculations.
