Lead Data Engineer (Snowflake, dbt) - 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract

About the role

The Financial Crime Compliance (FCC) team, part of CBA's Group Risk Function, is looking for a Lead Data Engineer for a 12-month fixed-term contract. The role supports ASB with data engineering for Transaction Monitoring and broader financial crime initiatives, acting as both a senior hands-on engineer and the technical and people lead for a small team of 3-4 data engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy and support data engineering solutions, and contribute directly to the codebase.
• Lead and line-manage a small team of data engineers, analysts and QAs, giving technical direction, coaching and feedback.
• Write high-quality, maintainable SQL and dbt code, and review code produced by the team.
• Design and optimise production-grade data pipelines, transformations and integration solutions.
• Establish engineering standards covering coding, testing, documentation, source control, deployment, monitoring and support.
• Work with stakeholders across ASB, FCC Australia and New Zealand and technology teams to turn complex requirements into reliable, scalable data solutions.
• Diagnose and resolve complex data, performance and integration issues, including production problems.

Required profile

• Experienced senior or lead data engineer who is hands-on and able to lead a team.
• Recent hands-on experience building and supporting production-grade data pipelines.
• Experience providing technical leadership, including code review, solution design and engineering standards.
• Experience with cloud and on-premises integration patterns; Oracle experience is advantageous.
• Experience in financial services, Financial Crime or Transaction Monitoring is advantageous but not essential.

Required skills

• Advanced SQL and strong experience with cloud data platforms, ideally Snowflake.
• Hands-on dbt experience, including transformations, models, tests and reusable components.
• Git/source control, CI/CD, automated testing, deployment and production support.
• Data quality, reconciliation, load assurance, monitoring and control mechanisms.
• IBM StreamSets or similar data movement and integration technologies.
