Kong API Developer (Hybrid, Melbourne)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Kong API Developer to design, implement and optimise secure, scalable API solutions. The role is based in Melbourne with a hybrid work model, allowing a mix of on‑site collaboration and remote work. The successful candidate will bring over eight years of hands‑on experience in API gateway technologies, Redis integration and modern micro‑service architectures.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, configure and deploy APIs using Kong API Gateway.
• Implement Redis‑based caching, rate limiting and session management.
• Monitor API performance, troubleshoot issues and ensure secure integrations.
• Design API specifications and versioning strategies.
• Ensure compliance with security standards and best practices.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and maintain API architecture documentation.
• Participate in code reviews and knowledge‑sharing sessions.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in API development and integration.
• Eligibility to work in Australia (citizen, PR or valid visa).
• Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.
• Proven ability to work independently and within agile teams.
• Demonstrated experience with performance tuning and monitoring tools.

Required skills

• Kong API Gateway and custom plugin development.
• Redis.
• RESTful APIs.
• Scripting languages such as Lua, Python, Go or Node.js.
• API security protocols: OAuth, JWT, mTLS, Zero Trust Architecture.
• CI/CD pipelines, Git, Docker and microservices environments.
