Graduate Naval Architect

About the role

BMT, a global consultancy in design, engineering, science and risk management for the maritime sector, is recruiting a Graduate Naval Architect in Melbourne. Recent graduates and early-career Naval Architects (up to 2 years' experience) are encouraged to apply. The work is tailored to each project, with a focus on developing you into a confident, autonomous engineer, alongside experienced mentors.

Key responsibilities

• Work on a range of projects supporting Australian and regional maritime programs, including new construction such as the Royal Australian Navy surface ship programs, and sustaining and upgrading existing ships.
• Provide specialist engineering design support for the integration of equipment and systems on naval vessels.
• Support whole-of-ship design teams across Naval Architecture, Electrical, Mechanical and Combat Systems Integration.
• Cover projects from engineering investigations and design concepts, through OEM interaction, to preliminary and detail design, production implementation and customer acceptance.
• Travel to undertake onsite ship inspections and test and trials.
• Represent BMT professionally with Defence and Navy clients, defence industry customers and OEM and system suppliers.

Required profile

• Degree in Naval Architecture.
• Australian citizenship, because the role requires an Australian Defence Security Clearance (pre-employment screening including a police records check).
• Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills, and well-developed problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and effective time management.
