Graduate Civil Engineer, Rail & Metro

About the role

Join SMEC’s Rail & Metro team in North Sydney as a Graduate Civil Engineer. You will be part of a two‑year Graduate Development Program, gaining hands‑on experience on major rail and metro infrastructure projects while receiving structured learning, mentoring and exposure across disciplines.

Key responsibilities

• Support the delivery of real infrastructure projects from day one, contributing to design, analysis and documentation.
• Assist in design development, including preparation of drawings, 3D models and technical documentation.
• Perform engineering calculations and analysis for roads, drainage and structural elements under senior guidance.
• Participate in site visits and inspections to understand how designs are implemented on live projects.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate design inputs and meet project delivery milestones.

Required profile

• A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Motivated graduate who enjoys problem‑solving and working in collaborative environments.

Required skills

• Exposure to design tools such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D (12D or similar advantageous).
• Ability to carry out engineering calculations and analysis for roads, drainage and structures.
