Geotechnician – Construction Materials Testing

About the role

Join SGS Australia’s Construction Materials Testing division as a Geotechnician, working on both field and laboratory sites to support construction and infrastructure projects. This full‑time, onsite position is based in Malaga with occasional short‑term regional assignments.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct soils field testing, including DCP, PSP and NDM methods.
• Collect, prepare, log and test construction material samples in line with Australian standards.
• Perform routine laboratory and field testing, calibrate and maintain testing equipment.
• Review test data, prepare clear reports and communicate professionally with clients.
• Support safe work practices, quality outcomes and continuous improvement, and guide junior technicians.

Required profile

• Minimum NATA Supervisory Level 2 (Level 3 or higher preferred) or equivalent qualifications/experience.
• Current Nuclear Density Gauge licence with proven experience in nuclear field density testing.
• Extensive practical experience in soil field and laboratory testing, including compaction control.
• Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, Main Roads WA test methods and CMT procedures.
• Ability to work independently, troubleshoot issues and travel for short‑term assignments.

Required skills

• DCP, PSP and NDM soil testing.
• Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
• Laboratory calibration and equipment maintenance.
• ISO 17025 and NATA quality assurance requirements.
• Soil testing techniques: PSD, Atterberg Limits, MDD/MMDD, CBR, field density and sampling.
