EL1 Financial Accountant

About the role

A large federal government department in Canberra is recruiting an EL1 Financial Accountant to lead its financial reporting and asset management. You will manage a small team and report to a Director (EL2). The role is a 12-month non-ongoing contract with strong potential for extension or a move to an ongoing position, with 1-2 days per week working from home.

Key responsibilities

• Lead monthly reporting, year-end processes and the preparation of the department's annual financial statements under the PGPA Act and Australian Accounting Standards
• Coordinate the financial statements audit with the Australian National Audit Office
• Oversee financial reporting for the department's assets so balances are accurate and well supported
• Prepare financial analysis and reconciliations, and resolve discrepancies, risks and issues
• Develop, document and maintain internal controls, policies and procedures
• Prepare briefs, reports and correspondence and advise stakeholders on financial issues
• Manage, mentor and develop your team, including one remote team member

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance or Commerce
• CA or CPA qualification
• Manager-level experience in a Big 4 or mid-tier firm, or financial reporting experience in government at EL1 or above
• Experience leading, developing and mentoring APS staff

Required skills

• Technical accounting and financial reporting, with a working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and accrual-based financial statements
• High-level analysis and reconciliation skills and sound professional judgement
• Ability to explain financial information clearly to senior leaders and non-finance stakeholders

What we offer

• Pay of $130k-$142k plus 15.4% employer superannuation
• 12-month contract with potential for extension or an ongoing role
• Hybrid arrangement of 1-2 days per week from home
