Deputy Sports Editor

About the role

Seven West Media is looking for a Deputy Sports Editor to help lead the sports sections of The West Australian, The Sunday Times and The Nightly across print, digital and audiovisual media. Reporting to the Sports Editor, you will work with an experienced team to develop award-winning coverage and strengthen newsbreaking, in a fast-paced news environment.

Key responsibilities

• Work with the Sports Editor to curate sport coverage across print and digital.
• Help manage the teams behind that coverage and assist with rostering.
• Ensure readers receive compelling, comprehensive and up-to-the-minute sport news.
• Design and run the sport sections of The West, The Sunday Times and The Nightly, including the Pre Game and The Game football liftouts, with eye-catching covers.
• Cultivate relationships with sport staff and industry contacts, exercise editorial judgment and oversee complex stories from concept to publication.
• Guide sports journalists in producing exclusive stories, features, analysis, podcasts and videos.

Required profile

• Intimate knowledge of all mainstream sporting codes and a solid understanding of the business of sport.
• Substantial journalism experience, including reporting on sport.
• Strong knowledge of digital audiences.
• Ability to work under pressure and balance multiple priorities, deadlines and platforms, with flexibility to work evenings and weekends on a flexible roster.
