Data Architect - Microsoft Fabric & Azure

About the role

Elysium Digital partners with government and private sector organisations on data strategy, governance and architecture, and is looking for a permanent, Principal-level Data Architect to join its data practice. The role turns data strategies into architectures that a client's own team can build and run, with a mix of embedded engagements and shorter advisory assignments.

Key responsibilities

• Define target data architectures, including integration, storage, modelling and serving patterns
• Design platform foundations such as capacities, workspaces, environments, security and access models, and deployment and monitoring processes
• Set the minimum viable architecture, standards and controls needed to deliver safely
• Document current architectures and flows, and plan migrations from Azure Synapse or on-premises SQL Server to Microsoft Fabric
• Design lakehouse, warehouse and semantic model structures and set modelling standards
• Build ownership, metadata, lineage, data quality and access controls, working with governance, privacy, cyber and identity teams
• Act as the architecture point of contact across concurrent projects, run architecture reviews and coach client engineers and analysts
• Advise on platform and tooling choices and explain trade-offs to non-technical decision makers
• Help build the data practice through reference architectures, patterns and accelerators, and contribute to proposals

Required profile

• Significant experience as a data architect or senior data engineer leading design of enterprise data platforms in complex, multi-stakeholder environments; government sector experience highly regarded
• Recent hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, including OneLake, lakehouses, warehouses, pipelines, notebooks, workspace and capacity management
• Experience leading at least one migration from Synapse, SQL Server or an on-premises warehouse to a modern cloud platform
• Strong consulting skills, including workshops, clear architecture artefacts and coaching within a client team
• Microsoft certifications such as DP-600, DP-700 or AZ-305 are highly regarded but not essential; eligibility for an AGSVA security clearance

Required skills

• Microsoft Fabric, Power BI semantic models, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Microsoft Purview and Entra ID
• Data modelling, including dimensional modelling and the medallion lakehouse pattern
• Data management frameworks such as DAMA DMBoK
• Familiarity with other platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Google Cloud or dbt
