Communications and Engagement Officer

About the role

The University of Tasmania is seeking a Communications and Engagement Officer to act as a key interface between the university and senior external stakeholders, including government departments, ministerial staff and Ministers. This full‑time, ongoing position is based in Hobart and involves shaping high‑level relationships and managing sensitive communications.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage multifaceted stakeholder engagement activities with senior external stakeholders.
• Independently assess, triage and manage sensitive or high‑risk communications issues.
• Provide strategic advice to senior university leaders on reputational, political and policy matters.
• Develop and implement communication and engagement strategies that integrate internal and external perspectives.
• Produce compelling written and visual content for media, newsletters, websites, Teams channels and email communications.
• Coordinate media releases, events and interviews, and contribute to key publications such as the Annual Report and Alumni Magazine.
• Support regional communications managers with on‑the‑ground advice in southern Tasmania.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience managing stakeholder relationships across a diverse environment, including direct engagement with senior government and ministerial offices.
• Highly developed strategic communication skills with the ability to influence, negotiate and advise at senior levels.
• Strong analytical capability to assess risks, interpret policy context and develop strategic responses.
• Capacity to work autonomously and exercise sound judgement in high‑pressure, politically sensitive settings.
