Communications and Engagement Advisor

About the role

Wellington Shire Council is seeking an experienced Communications and Engagement Advisor to join its Customer and Communications team on a two‑year fixed‑term contract. The role will lead strategic communications and community engagement initiatives that inform, connect and involve residents in Council decisions and projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and delivery of strategic communication and engagement plans for Council initiatives.
• Provide expert advice and leadership on community engagement across the organisation.
• Design and deliver communication campaigns for key projects and priorities.
• Manage and support Council’s engagement platforms and processes.
• Build strong relationships with media, community groups and external stakeholders.
• Analyse engagement outcomes and apply insights to improve future approaches.
• Support emergency communications and media responses when required.
• Lead a Communications and Engagement Officer and contribute to a high‑performing team.

Required profile

• Qualifications in communications, community engagement, social science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Proven experience delivering strategic communication and stakeholder engagement programmes.
• Strong writing, presentation and facilitation abilities.
• Knowledge of community engagement principles and frameworks (e.g., IAP2) or willingness to obtain them.
• Experience working in a government or public‑sector environment is highly regarded.
