Commercial and Contract Specialist

About the role

SMA Australia is seeking a Commercial and Contract Specialist to join its Large Scale team in North Sydney. Reporting to the Head of Commercial and Contract Management, you will manage a portfolio of contracts across their full lifecycle, supporting negotiations and ensuring compliance with company standards and Australian law.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and administer supply and service agreements, NDAs, variations and ancillary contracts for assigned projects.
• Apply SMA Australia’s standard contract templates, playbooks and negotiation position papers, escalating any deviations.
• Identify and assess commercial risk, including liability, indemnity, warranty, IP and compliance obligations.
• Prepare and track security instruments such as bank guarantees, letters of credit and parent company guarantees, together with insurance requirements.
• Support the management of commercial disputes, claims and defect/warranty notices, preparing correspondence and evidence.
• Provide first‑pass review of customer and subcontractor terms and contribute commercial input to project bids and pricing.
• Ensure contracts comply with Australian legislation (Corporations Act, Australian Consumer Law, PPSA) and SMA AG global policies.
• Maintain contract records in the contract lifecycle management system and keep project trackers up to date.
• Maintain the lessons‑learned register and help develop templates, playbooks and processes.
• Provide responsive commercial support to sales, project management, service and engineering teams.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of experience in commercial management or contract administration.
• Experience handling contracts in the Australia and New Zealand markets.
• Proven ability to assess commercial risk, including liability, indemnity and warranty obligations.
• Familiarity with Australian legislation such as the Corporations Act, Australian Consumer Law and the Personal Property Securities Act.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work autonomously in a hybrid environment.
