Clinical Director – Palliative Care

About the role

The Clinical Director of Palliative Care will provide strategic, clinical and professional leadership for St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne’s comprehensive Palliative Care Service. Reporting to the Clinical Program Director of Continuing Care, the role oversees specialist palliative care across acute, sub‑acute, community and correctional settings.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based, person‑centred palliative care services across all sites.
• Develop and implement strategic and operational plans aligned with Continuing Care and St Vincent's Health Australia objectives.
• Promote a culture of clinical excellence, safety, quality improvement and innovation.
• Provide specialist advice to multidisciplinary teams on symptom management, end‑of‑life and holistic care.
• Mentor, educate and succession‑plan a high‑performing multidisciplinary workforce.
• Drive service development, including innovative models of care across inpatient, sub‑acute, community and specialist settings.
• Establish strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including academic and government bodies.
• Advance education, training and research activities to strengthen the service’s academic profile.
• Lead business planning to meet clinical, operational, workforce and financial targets.

Required profile

• Legally qualified medical practitioner registered with AHPRA.
• Member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians with specialist qualification in Palliative Medicine.
• Proven leadership and management experience in healthcare.
• Track record of building high‑performing clinical teams.
• Excellent communication skills with patients, families and multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Commitment to teaching, quality improvement and professional development.
• Active involvement in hospital or community activities.
