Chief Executive Officer - Department of Mining and Energy

About the role

The Department of Mining and Energy (DME) leads the Northern Territory Government's work on geoscience, exploration, mining and petroleum regulation, legacy mine remediation and the design of the Territory's electricity systems. With major projects such as the Darwin Energy Hub, the Remote Power Partnership and electricity market reform underway, the department is seeking an accomplished executive to lead it as Chief Executive Officer. Reporting to the Minister for Mining and Energy, the CEO turns the Territory's resources and energy priorities into action, advising the Minister and Government strategically and commercially.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure regulation under the Territory's mining, petroleum and energy legislation is effective, efficient and trusted
• Keep the Territory open for business, making timely decisions and offering practical support so projects and businesses move from proposal to operation
• Lead improvements in how the Department regulates and facilitates investment
• Oversee the path to secure, reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity
• Maintain strong governance and financial discipline
• As a member of the CEO Coordination Committee, work with other chief executives and build relationships with industry, investors, land councils, Traditional Owners and communities

Required profile

• Accomplished senior executive with strong commercial and financial acumen
• Experience leading a regulatory function, major portfolio or organisation in the resources, energy or broader economic sector
• Sound economic judgement and decisive leadership, with proven results
• A hands-on leader who understands how government works and delivers with urgency
• Comfortable giving frank advice to Government and peers, balancing economic development, community benefit, environmental responsibility and regulatory integrity
• Resilient, self-aware and committed to stable leadership over the term
