AWS Cloud SME – Lead CloudOps Team

About the role
We are seeking a proactive AWS Cloud SME to lead and mentor a CloudOps team in Brisbane. The role focuses on production support, platform improvement and aligning cloud strategy with business goals.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage CloudOps Engineers, providing technical guidance and career development support.
- Conduct one‑on‑ones, performance reviews, and goal‑setting sessions.
- Define and enforce CloudOps standards, processes, and best practices.
- Drive sprint planning, prioritisation, and workload distribution.
- Act as the escalation point for critical incidents and complex infrastructure issues.
- Align cloud strategy with business objectives in collaboration with senior leadership.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and accountability.
- Coordinate cross‑functional initiatives with development, security, and DevOps teams.
- Manage and support production AWS infrastructure (EC2, ECS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront, Load Balancers) ensuring high availability and performance.
- Design, review, and maintain architectures aligned with the AWS Well‑Architected Framework.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure and application issues promptly.
- Monitor system health using CloudWatch, New Relic or similar tools.
- Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines for reliable cloud deployments.
- Apply networking fundamentals (IP addressing, routing, DNS, firewalls) to resolve connectivity issues.
- Manage resource provisioning, capacity planning, and AWS cost optimisation.
- Oversee on‑call rotations, incident response and post‑incident reviews.
- Track and report on SLAs, SLOs and KPIs to measure reliability and team performance.
Required profile
- 7+ years of hands‑on AWS experience.
- Proven experience mentoring engineers and managing stakeholders.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication and leadership abilities.
- Experience with observability and monitoring tools.
- Solid networking knowledge (IP addressing, routing, NAT, VPN, load balancing).
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Terragrunt, CloudFormation).
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI).
- Demonstrated expertise in AWS cost management and optimisation.
Required skills
- AWS services: EC2, Route 53, S3, RDS, Lambda, IAM, VPC, CloudFormation.
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Terragrunt, CloudFormation.
- Observability tools: CloudWatch, New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus.
- Networking: IP addressing, routing, NAT, VPN, load balancing.
- CI/CD: GitLab CI.
- Containerisation: Docker, ECS, EKS.
- Optional: Azure, OCI exposure.
- Preferred: AWS Associate or Professional certification.
